When deciding to build a swimming pool, there are two main options that are available. The first is to hire a company to take care of the whole process, which involves assessing the land, excavating the required soil, building or purchasing the actual pool, installing it fully and ensuring that it and all of the equipment works as they should. Whilst this option is generally the least hassle free, as after the initial involvement and decisions made by the owner, all of the work required is carried out by the company, it is also by far the most expensive option.
The second option is to build and install a swimming pool yourself. Whilst this is a much more labor intensive and often complex way of building a pool, it is becoming increasingly popular due to the financial benefits - once the pool has been purchased, the only other cost involved is the hiring of machinery and equipment to create the required space for the pool to be installed into.
Contrary to popular belief, building a pool without the assistance from a company is not a massively complicated process. As long as the following guidelines are adhered to, the whole process should be relatively straightforward.
1. Choose your pool type
There are three main types of swimming pools available and all have their benefits; however they all have their negative aspects also and it is therefore imperative that the correct type is chosen prior to any work commencing.
Block and liner is the most traditional type, which requires for individual concrete stones to first be laid, forming the walls and floor, followed by the plastering of a vinyl liner. In essence, it may seem like a simple way of installing a pool, but it requires precise planning and experience in building work is very beneficial.
The second option, polymer panels, is becoming increasingly popular due to the reduced cost involved but the high quality end product. Simple and straightforward to install, polymer panels are attached to buttresses that are cemented to the ground, making the whole pool frame extremely sturdy and reliable.
One-piece fiberglass swimming pools are the final option and are exactly as their name suggests - a single piece of fiberglass in the shape of a pool. This is without doubt the easiest type to install as it simply requires the fiberglass frame to be lowered carefully into the ground.
2. Draw it
After you have made your choice, the exact dimensions should be taken home and marked on the ground, with any specific instructions for additional space to be noted.
3. Excavate the soil
The most labor intensive part of installing the pool is the removal of soil in the area where it is be placed. It is highly recommended to hire equipment to aid with this process, as well as paying for a company to remove all of the unwanted soil.
It should be noted at this point that it isn't imperative for the walls and floor to be smooth - as long as there are no obvious mounds of soil or large stones, any final amendments can be made when the pool is actually being installed.
4. Install it
Depending on which type of pool you have chosen depends entirely on how exactly to install it. Extensive research should be carried out before attempting to install any pool and if possible, advice and help should be sought by someone who has carried out the process previously.
Above all, simply remember to take your time. Once a swimming pool is installed, it can be very difficult, time-consuming and costly to resolve any mistakes and therefore as much time as is needed should be allocated for the full installation of a pool.
